This eau de toilette is elegant, sophisticated, and self-sufficient. The opening isn't a come-hither deal. It's a little clinical, with a hint of something that smells like dry tobacco. That something turns out to be iris - the single most expensive perfume ingredient in the world. One kilogram of Italian iris butter will set you back $30000. And what do you get for your money? You get a flower that doesn't smell floral. Iris actually smells woody and leathery. The effect is austere, but regal. As it goes along, No. 19 gets subtly more feminine, with appearance of some low-key florals that include jasmine, rose and hyacinth. But No. 19 never quite rolls over into girliness. It stays in control with galbanum, a bitter green plant resin, along with grassy vetiver. And that leathery iris lets you know who's boss. No. 19 is not a needy perfume. It's polished and aloof, and doesn't need reinforcement from yes men to do its job. When it comes to clothes, the Devil might wear Prada, but as for perfume, the Devil definitely wears No.19.
