Upton Bass: This very special UB Professor double bass is number two of three flat back basses made from the same tree. The backs were made of 6 passes through our band-saw...so when book matched it makes 3 IDENTICAL flat-backs. The varnish is also a first for us. Taking the critical aspects of the 2009 ISB workmanship judges to heart, we sought inspiration from modern Italian violins and went with a very transparent amber varnish polished to perfection that would show off and accentuate the wood. Perfectly clean details and workmanship coupled with our new "Italian" varnish and using every bit of tonal knowledge we have honed over the years...the only thing that keeps this bass from being a competition bass is the entire UB workshop worked together to craft this fine double bass.
