Il comprend aussi une autre dimension, une guerre à coups de récits opposés et de négation des récits des autres, tournant autour des deux traumatismes à l'origine du conflit : la Shoah, la destruction des Juifs d'Europe, et la Nakba, le déracinement des Arabes de Palestine. S'appuyant sur une vaste documentation, Gilbert Achcar se livre à un examen approfondi des réactions arabes à l'antisémitisme et au nazisme, en soulignant leur grande diversité politique et idéologique. Avec un souci constant d'objectivité et de distance critique, il traite tant de l'époque de la montée du nazisme et de la Shoah que des périodes qui se sont succédé depuis la Nakba jusqu'à nos jours, brossant ainsi un tableau captivant de l'histoire arabe contemporaine.
