This game takes place on a small fictional island located off the north coast of Japan called Skira in the modern day. The island which is contested territory between China and Russia becomes the center of an armed conflict when significant amounts of oil are discovered there. The game begins as you arrive with American forces who are tasked capturing the island on the behalf of the Russians from Chinese forces. Skira is based directly off of Kiska Island, Alaska. The game developers have based Skira, strictly, off of Kiska Island, which is located in the western end of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and was involved in WWII. The developers have endeavored to copy the 220 sq km accurately to give players a sandbox composed of natural terrain untarnished by level designers leaving players deal with the strategic challenges posed by real terrain. Skira is a volcanic island with a number of different terrain types. At one end is a stratovolcano, 8.5 by 6.4 km (5.3 by 4.0 mi) in diameter at its base and 1221 meters (4006 ft) high, at the base of the volcano is a section of low lake lands.
