This transit method works by exploiting the ability to jump into a minecart from up to three metres away. Just stick minecarts in place three metres apart and you can travel between them as fast as you can click, up to 20 clicks per second. At three metres per jump, that works out to 60 metres per second, verified with a stopwatch. That's 6× times the speed of my people mover, 7½× the top speed of rolling minecarts, and 14× the speed of walking. Just about the only thing faster is a redstone signal. Putting a system in the Nether would allow overland transit at 480 m/s (1700 kph, 1100 mph)—1.4× the speed of sound in dry air and standard temperature and pressure. The vertical version is capable of 80 m/s (290 kph, 180 mph) thanks to the vertical arrangement allowing a four‐block spacing. It's possible to offset the minecarts by up to two blocks on a secondary axis with no loss of speed on the primary one. I've heard that minecarts like to glitch into the solid blocks on either side of them in multiplayer. I suggest replacing the blocks with cobwebs and seeing if the carts still glitch out.
