These are two of my favorite current headphones, as both of them excel at certain things, but together, they cover every single music genre perfectly. The AKG Q701 and Ultrasone HFi-2400 both provide excellent sound quality, some of the best available on the market for less than 500$, especially the Ultrasone, which in my opinion beat even the Sennheiser HD650. Mid/high end audiophile headphone setup, which for a price of about $1000 gets very close to world class performance, only slightly bested by much pricier systems. Above this level, any upgrade in sound quality, even a barely noticeable one, becomes pretty expensive. Analytical nature of the sound that Essence ST produces, as well as extremely good measurements, and great amounts of detail make it a perfect source for the slightly dark and mellow sounding HD650's. Essence ST is truly a great sound card, able to hold its own against much more expensive stand alone DACs. Little Dot MkV is a very transparent and neutral amp, with ruler flat frequency response, maybe only slightly raised at the top end. It's able to output enough power into the HD650's to run them at comfortably loud volume levels between 12 and 13 o'clock. It is also a good amp for any other headphone with high impedance. It's not that great for lower impedance headphones because it has a pretty high output impedance. For example, it can't power the AKG Q701 properly, it struggles a lot, and with some older recordings, it isn't even loud enough when cranked up to 100%. My second favorite headphone setup, beaten by a small margin only in some aspects (mostly in soundstage, imaging, dynamics) by Musical Fidelity M1DAC + Ultrasone HFi-2400. |
